HUSBANDS LOVE YOUR WIVES

Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Colossians 3:19

One good measure of a married man is how he treats his wife. I like to say, “That man is a successful failure, who succeeds on his job, but fails in his marriage.” Every Christian man has been called to be a reflection of Christ to his wife.

The word “Husband” is from an old English word, meaning, “House bond.” It supposes that the man is like the mortar that holds building blocks together; that is, the ‘bonding’ of the family depends on him. God has given every man leadership of his home as the head, to determine how the home turns out.

Ephesians 5:25-29 outlines how husbands should love their wives – like Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her. This means that a man should nurture his wife, praise her with his words, make sacrifices for her, not speak harshly to her or maltreat her. He should be affectionate and tender towards her, loving her as he would love himself, give her gifts and take special delight in her.

One great way to show her love, is to be committed to her – let her body satisfy you, share your life with her, carry her along, and let her be the most important woman in your life – not your mother or any other person. You cannot be a good man outside and your wife is dying at home.

Ask yourself as a man, “If Jesus was married to my wife, what kind of husband would He be to her?” When your wife looks at you, who does she see? Does she see Christlikeness or does she see a mean and insensitive man?

You may say, “Pastor you don’t know my wife, she is stubborn and disrespectful.” But look at Jesus Christ and us; it was while we were yet sinners that He died and demonstrated His love for us. Can you also use love and your Christlikeness to change her? You ought to be to her who God expects you to be, not based on who she is. Let your wife look at you and see Jesus, the Man of all men!
