REINVENT YOU: BECOME INDISPENSABLE

A vital ingredient for reinventing yourself is becoming so good at what you do that you become significant wherever you are, causing people to miss you when you are not there. To be indispensable means to be important, absolutely necessary, essential, or being an integral part of something. The fastest way to becoming indispensable is by being a problem solver, bringing excellence to what you do and by adding value to others in your sphere of influence.

Daniel distinguished himself above others because he operated with an excellent spirit; this made it easy for him to rise to an exalted position in a foreign land, and gave him the opportunity to serve as an Adviser to four successive governments. He was so good at what he did that he basically became irreplaceable; little wonder, he was relevant at the highest circles in his time. Likewise, your ability to excel at what you do is your ticket to being relevant at all times, making you well sought out, preferred, and indispensable.

Onesimus added so much value to Apostle Paul that he dedicated one book in the bible to Philemon just to plead on Onesimus’ account. Joseph was so valuable in the prison that everything was kept in his care; consequently, it was his ability to add value to others that brought him before kings. In fact, Pharaoh himself said about him. “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?” (Genesis 41:38). Make yourself so indispensable that you become irresistible; you will remain highly sought after.

To become indispensable, be diligent at what you do; do it with a little class and passion. Do it with a smile, with a sense of duty to God and man. Go a little earlier and close a little later. Extend a helping hand to your colleagues and help to do what nobody else wants to do – yes, go above the call of duty. Leave a good impression in the hearts of everyone who comes to your table, your shop or your office. I tell you, when opportunity comes, they will remember you; if there ever is a need to let go someone from the office, people will arise in your defence; in fact, a pay raise is just around the corner. Let me end with this little story:

A little boy went to use the phone in a store and dialed a number. The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation:

Boy: “Ma, Can you give me the job of washing your clothes? 
Woman: (at the other end of the phone line) “I already have someone to wash my clothes.”
Boy: “Ma, I will wash your clothes for half the price than the person doing it now.”
Woman: I’m very satisfied with the person who is presently washing my clothes. 
Boy: (determined) “Ma, I’ll also sweep your house and wash your cars for free.
Woman: No, thank you. 
With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver. 
The store-owner, who was listening to all this, walked over to the boy. 
Store Owner: “Son… I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job.” 
Boy: “No thanks sir.”
Store Owner: But you were just really pleading for a job now.
Boy: No Sir, I was just checking my performance at the job I already have. 
I am the one who is working for that lady I was talking to!”
