The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; His hands shall also finish it…” – Zechariah 4:9
REFERENCE:
August is the eighth month, and eight is the number of new beginnings. Everything on earth has an origin; Genesis is the book of beginnings because it chronicles the beginning of all things. God is the author (or beginner) of all things; He loves it when we begin or start new things; things we have always wanted to do. Zechariah 4:10 says, “…these seven rejoice to see the plumbline in the hands of Zerubbabel.” God rejoiced when Zerubbabel started the work.
God loves new beginnings because they speak of faith, and He is a Faith-God. “By faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible,” Hebrews 11:3. All God had when He began the beginning was faith, for out of nothing He brought everything forth. Likewise, starting any project is a call to walk by faith because starting a new venture is a journey into the ‘unknown.’ You have to conquer the usual fears that dog anyone who wants to begin – the fear of failure and what may go wrong. Nevertheless, God says, “Get Started!” Start what you have always wanted to; don’t let the idea remain on paper. Make the marriage proposal, register the business, start the course, pay the first installment, etc. All Zerubbabel had was a plumbline, but God was pleased that he started.
You may have started a project, business, relationship, or investment that didn’t turn out well or was aborted halfway; God says, “Forget the former things, I will do a new thing.” Don’t be a prisoner of your past bad experiences; reach out for the new things that are still possible. God is not done with you yet, so don’t let discouragement stop you. You never know what you can do, achieve, or become if you will only get started. Isaac began and he became very prosperous. Jacob only had a staff (walking stick) but became a nation. Zerubbabel began with a plumbline, but he finished building. Do not despise small beginnings. Though your beginning was small, your latter will increase with great abundance.
Getting started says to God that you are tired of staying at a particular level, and you want to move up or become better. That pleases God. He will honor your faith, go on the journey with you, and ensure it turns out well. So, what are you waiting for? Get started and get going!
