“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.” ~ Psalm 23:5
REFERENCE
This Psalm has offered comfort to saints for many generations. It is the picture of a shepherd’s extraordinary care for his sheep. He spares no expense to bring them to green pastures and watering spots; to guide, lead, and protect them from all perceived and present dangers.
‘A table in the presence of enemies’ speaks of God’s favor – honor when men feel you are not qualified or when those who don’t like you get to witness God’s rich blessings in your life. ‘Anoint my head with oil’ reveals the Good Shepherd as the One who cares for us in hostile situations (valley of shadows or presence of enemies), supplies our needs (when critics feel we should go hungry), and refreshes us with the oil of His Spirit. This is the blessing of letting the Good Shepherd lead you in righteous paths, and guide you with His rod and staff (His Word).
Oil in the orient speaks of wealth and prosperity. Anointing the head with oil alludes to the custom of oiling the head on festival occasions as an indication of prosperity and rejoicing. Orientals washed the feet of guests when they came into their houses as a favorable welcome. It represents the anointing of the Holy Spirit with all His graces, our source of spiritual joy and comfort. Perfumed oil was poured on the heads of distinguished guests so that the smell calls respect and favor to them; the sweet perfume says, “Treat this one with honor/favorably.”
After pouring the oil, David said, “My cup runs over.” The oil of God produced that much abundance and prosperity. His cup was overflowing, not just full. He affirmed that God would never leave him stranded or left to want. No matter how unfavorable his situation, the oil of God would ensure his cup always brimmed over. This pictures the distinguished guest, with the ‘perfumed oil’ on his head, being served a large portion because of the favor upon him. It doesn’t matter if he is liked or not, the perfumed oil ensures his portion is full and abundant.
As you go into the week, despite the adversarial circumstances in our world and the wickedness of men, God will anoint your head with perfumed oil. You will be favored everywhere you go. The sweet-smelling oil of favor on you will attract goodness, blessings, prosperity, and gifts to you until your cup runs over. I decree abundance over your life. May God show up for you as Yahweh-Rohi, the Shepherd of Israel. He will lead you to the place of abundant blessings. Your cup will neither be half-full nor empty; it will overflow with abundant blessings, in Jesus’ name.
