EXALTED BY HUMILITY

“Therefore, God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name.” ~ Philippians 2:9

Yesterday, we considered the depth of Jesus’ humility; how He divested himself of all the rights of divinity. He took on human flesh, was born to a poor carpenter, and lived a normal life. But it did not end there because His humility qualified Him for the greatest exaltation and honor.

Jesus’ humility was not a product of self-deprecation or low self-image, but of obedience to God. “He became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” He chose humility in order to be a fit vessel in God’s hands. Jesus was never less than divine while on earth. His divine glory veiled behind His human flesh, peeped out once in a while – as a little boy in the temple, as an adult on the mount of transfiguration, and in Gethsemane when the soldiers who came to arrest him fell when He spoke. His humility was a choice.

His deep humiliation became the basis for His glorious exaltation. He brought Himself so low that the only next place for God to take Him was ‘so high.’ He came to serve and not be served, so God made Him Supreme King, that all may serve Him: whether of things above, on earth, or beneath the earth. He has taught us that the way to promotion is humility.

His exaltation began at the lowest point of His humiliation; the thief on the cross worshipped him (calling Him Lord), and a soldier said, “Truly, this was the Son of God.” Hence, God gave Him a name that is above other names. No other name compares with His. He is Redeemer, Savior, Christ, and the anointed of God. His rank, titles, and dignity are above all others. His name alone secures man’s salvation and access to heaven, and demons tremble at the name.

If we are humble like Christ, we can expect God to exalt us like Him or with Him. “Though the Lord is on high, yet He regards the lowly.” “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.” We often fear that if we are humble, men will take advantage of us; we should know that exaltation, promotion, and honor come from God. When it is time for your exaltation, no man shall be able to stop it. Esther did not meet the world’s standard of beauty, and David did not meet its requirement for kingship, but God chose them for great honor. Do not be afraid that humility may make you lose out! God is the one who gives honor and promotion, and if Christ was exalted through humility, your exaltation is sure.
