“The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence.” – II Samuel 22:3
REFERENCE:
In a world of variables, we unconsciously seek stability or assurances. We seek things or people we can lean on or trust to hold up or stay with us through tough times. However, experience has shown that men disappoint, money develops wings and flies away, friends leave, and positions or offices of influence do not endure forever. The only dependable One is God.
David lived a life of uncertainties. He struggled with acceptance in his family; his boss was after his life, and he had to go into exile, leaving behind family, friends, and property; much of his life was on the run. When David wrote this psalm, he had been crowned king of Israel and was victorious over all his enemies. Hence, he ascribes the following traits to God – Rock, Fortress, Deliverer, Strength, Shield, and Stronghold. The summary is that He is a dependable God.
To be dependable means to be trustworthy and reliable. It is unfailing, unswerving, and constant. You must understand this about God. It will affect how you respond to the fluctuations of life. You will know you have an anchor that is steady and sure. You will realize that with God on your side, you will come through every storm, prevail over adversaries, and eventually sit on the throne He has destined you for. You can trust Him with your future.
You can never go wrong trusting God. Scripture says those who trust Him are like Mount Zion; God’s mercy surrounds them, they will not fear evil tidings, and shall not want any good thing. Job said, “Though He slays me, yet will I trust Him.” He knew that with God, no matter what, all would be well. Will you equally completely trust this dependable God?
We trust people whose reliability is proven. God has proven His dependability to us severally. If in doubt, look at creation; everything still is today because the word God spoke in the beginning is as valid today as it was then. Distrusting God says He is unpredictable. If that is your disposition, you will not experience Him as David did in our text – in uncommon victories, protection, help, support, and fulfilling His promise. He is a dependable God. He does whatever He says.
