The son realized that he had been very foolish. He thought, ‘All my father’s hired workers have plenty of food…I will leave and go to my father…’ – Luke 15:17-18 (ERV).

After you have ascertained ‘where you are,’ the next question that should come up is: ‘Is this my fate or my state?’ If you consider it your fate, then you are stuck, if you see it as a temporary state then you can still achieve the goals you set out to achieve. If these goals are God-given in the first instance, then you should not change your mind because of your present stagnation or lateness in starting. The Prodigal Son could have taken his situation as his fate, but he saw it as a temporary state so he took remedial decisions.

Number five question is: ‘What stopped me from getting there?’ – You need to take an honest inventory of what stopped you from achieving those set goals; doing this will basically help you to know where your battle is. For most of us, it is procrastination and bad habits. Sometimes, it is prayerlessness and even inertia – we just didn’t get started at all. For the Prodigal Son, it was bad financial habits- bad decisions lack of saving culture, and misuse of money.
The sixth question that follows is: ‘What distracted me?’ – For some of us, we got off-track and started pursuing items that were not on our agenda. E.g. spending too much time on social media and in front of the TV. Misplaced priorities are responsible for where some of us are today. You have expended your time, energy and money on unimportant things and now the important things are left undone. The Prodigal Son got distracted by friends and the good things of life.
May God grant you the grace to set your priorities right in Jesus name!
