Then the Lord said to Cain, ‘Where is Abel your brother?’ He said, ‘I do not know, am I my brother’s keeper?’ Genesis 4:9
REFERENCE
Genesis 4:3-9
God believes in interpersonal relationships, brotherliness, and friendships. He also believes in the family and marriage bonds in each of these relationships; they are responsibilities God has given us and He expects us to be accountable for how we take care of the other party and how we affect their lives for Christ.
This kind of relationship is sacrificial and giving but not selfish; it looks for the good and benefit of the other, it spends time and money on the other and prays for them. It allows for the other’s weaknesses and mistakes and it always loves unconditionally.
Cain’s question to God calls for attention. “Are we our brother’s keeper?” Why did God say that it was not good for the man to be alone, back in the Garden of Eden? Why did He decide to make a help that complements the man? Why did God decide to plant us in homes? Why didn’t He leave us to roam the streets like scavengers? The answer is simple: we are responsible for each other. So, yes, we are our brother’s keeper.
Christianity is about brotherly love, the early church exemplified this truth. When we look out for one another, there won’t be lack amongst us, none distressed, none alone and without help in the world, hope will be restored, and everyone will be safe and free. Are you going to bring your full participation to the fore in caring for your brother and sister? God expects nothing less than your full participation today.
