WHERE IS YOUR FAITH?

“…Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. But He said to them, “Where is your faith?” ~ Luke 8:24-25

Scripture tells us twice, “The just shall live by his faith.” It is because life will often put us in circumstances that require our faith response. There will be a likelihood of distressing news, sicknesses, financial obligation deadlines, battles against negative thoughts, etc. As He asked His disciples, Jesus will ask you at such times, “Where is your faith?”

Life put the disciples of Jesus Christ in a life-threatening situation. They encountered elemental forces they had no physical power to control; it defied all their expertise as oarsmen and sailors. They already saw themselves perish, and so, with fear and anxiety, they called to Jesus. He calmed the storm and asked them, “Where is your faith?”

This question presupposes that Jesus expected the disciples to have done something about the situation. He implied, “You have what it takes to take care of the situation. Why did you not use it?” In other words, “This problem should not have overwhelmed you if you used the faith I already gave you” – for we all have a measure of faith given us.

By asking, “Where is your faith?” Jesus could have meant any of these three things:

1.     Where was your faith to believe that when I said, “Let us go to the other side of the lake,” what I said would come to pass? Has anything I said before now ever failed?

2.     Where was your faith, that when the wind started to blow and the waves started to rise, you did not address them and issued no authoritative command to arrest them, even though I had given you My authority to use? You have the victory that overcomes the world (I John 5:4b) resident in your hearts and potent in your mouth, but you did not use it.

The disciples did not act in faith by waking Jesus up to deal with something they could handle. Do not talk to God about your mountain; talk to your mountain about your God.  Perhaps you are confronted by the winds and waves of life: family challenges, a daunting target at work, debt needing urgent repayment, or a door you have been waiting to open. Jesus is in your boat, and you will not sink; but He says, “Where is your faith?”
