Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. Luke 2:10
Good news is any bit of information that uplifts the soul and gladdens the heart; it is like cold water to a weary soul (Proverbs 25:25). Jesus’ coming heralded the phase of good news to all people. As a result, we can join the heavenly host to shout, “Glory to God in the highest!”
Through the birth of this ‘Star’ we have joy and peace with God; and the wall of separation between us and God has been brought down. In Christ Jesus, there is no more condemnation for us, we have unfettered access to God and we have become perpetual recipients of God’s goodwill towards all men…O what joy fills my heart!
Jesus’ coming turned our mourning into dancing: The widow of Nain was in deep mourning because her only son died, but Jesus came and replaced her mourning with dancing by raising her son from the dead. This same joy He brought to the homes of Jairus and Lazarus. (See Luke 7:11-15, Matthew 9:18-25, John 11:32-44).
Imagine the sense of embarrassment the couple at the wedding in Cana would have felt if Jesus had not come. He turned that embarrassing situation around by providing better wine for their occasion and gave them joy instead of sorrow (John 2:1-10). He never entered a life where He did not bring joy. He is the joy of the whole world.
More importantly for us is that Jesus’ coming still brings joy today – the joy of salvation, the joy of reconciliation with God, the joy of knowing we have a Heavenly Father who cares deeply for us, the joy of knowing all things work together for our good, and the joy of knowing heaven awaits us!
Hail the Joy Bringer and crown Him the Lord of Joy!
