REFERENCE:
Timai (Aramaic) was his name, and it means ‘highly prized’ or ‘honored,’ but he was not at a location that befit his name. He was a blind beggar, sitting at the side of the road outside the village, wrapped in his beggar’s cloak. There was nothing that looked honorable at that season of Timai’s life. I wonder how often Timai would have imagined himself with sight, able to go where he wanted, work to support himself, and genuinely live honorably, as his name meant.
He may have been blind, but his mind and other body parts were not bound. He yearned to leave where he was; this was evident by his actions when the opportunity presented itself. When he heard that Jesus was passing by, he kept shouting to get Jesus’ attention. He was not ready to remain where life detained him. Life had dealt some bad cards to Timai, but he would use the good ones to get out of where he was.
When the light came in the person of Jesus, he kept shouting, not once or twice, until he was a nuisance. He kept at it, stayed with it, knocked and kept knocking, asked and kept asking, shouted and kept shouting; his disability would not bind him, his position, fear of rejection, or shame. This may be his only chance to live the life of his dreams, and nothing would stop him.
He finally caught the Lord’s attention! Do you think Jesus did not know he was there or did not hear him? How many beggars may have sat with Timai when Jesus passed by? Only he did something worth remembering when he pushed for his miracle by refusing to give up.
When Jesus finally stopped and said he should come, the crowd told him to have courage, but Timai had already shown courage by refusing to be quiet, springing up from his beggarly position, and throwing away his beggar’s cloak. He reckoned that he would no longer need the beggar’s rags. His light had come, and he was ready to shine.
Jesus is here now. Rise, be courageous, and refuse to wallow in self-pity. Throw off the cloak of misery, bitterness, or shame; refuse to stay down in that seeming defeat. You are fighting from a stance of victory! Shout, knock, ask, and go again. There may be a handicap, disadvantage, or setback, but you are not bound by them. The Lord is with you, and His glory rises upon you.
