John 15:1-8 (ERV)
The above statement implies that one of the ways we show the world that we are Jesus’ disciples or followers is by producing fruits – It is tantamount to being fertile and yielding results that will benefit others. A fruitful Christian life manifests the fruits of the Spirit; it is impactful and exists to bless others.
God’s first words to mankind at creation were: “Be fruitful and multiply” (Gen 1:28). This is literally a command – a direct order from God to mankind. This means, God has programmed in every man, the capacity to bring forth fruits, else He will be an unjust God to demand from you, what you don’t have.
When God gave man the mandate to be productive, He did not put any time or age limit to it. Rather, it is a life time mandate of Fruitfulness. So, you can’t get to a point where you think that God is done with you and then close shop. Looking closely at life, it makes sense for age or time to limit certain kinds of productivity, but not so with faith. Faith places no such limitations; and as Christians we walk by faith not by sight in every aspect of our lives.
Fruitfulness is not limited to bearing children. Scriptures talk about the fruit of the lips, fruit of our thoughts, being prosperous with the works of our hands, bearing fruits in good work, etc. (Heb. 13:15, Jer. 6:19, Colossians 1:10, Deuteronomy 30:9), this points to the truth that God wants you to prosper in all areas of your life; because your productivity brings Him glory. However, to bear fruits through all seasons of life, you must abide in God and let His Words abide in you.
A tree can only enter its full glory when it bears fruits. It fulfills the objective of being planted when it produces fruit for its owner. Likewise, the usefulness of your life is in the fruitfulness of your life – when you solve problems, contribute something meaningful to society, and fulfill God’s will for your life. By your fruits you show God that his investment in your life is worth it. Therefore, do not be content with a fruitless life that does not make any difference or solve any problems. Put pressure on yourself to be fruitful!
