But Jesus told him, “Anyone who puts his hand to the plough and then looks behind him is useless for the kingdom of God.” – Luke 9:62 (PHILLIPS)

Luke 9:23-24 & 61-62

Commitment is the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, interest, pursuit, etc. It is having a sense of responsibility or being obligated to doing something. The law that undergirds commitment is the law of faithfulness. The bible says in Proverbs 28:20, “A faithful man shall abound in blessings…”

Jesus pointed out in our text, that anyone who cannot go all the way or give a 100% in following Him is useless for the kingdom of God – such a person is unfit for service in the kingdom. In the same way, anyone who does things haphazardly and halfheartedly is unfit to handle prestigious positions in life. Nobody ever did anything worthwhile without inconveniencing themselves. This is why those who love too much convenience never make news, but remain in oblivion or enjoy short-lived breakthroughs. Regardless of your sphere of influence, commitment will always stand you out.

When you are committed to a cause, hardships don’t stop you, inconveniences don’t shake you, and setbacks don’t turn you back…you have seen something and are willing to pay the price for it. Tony Robbins said, “There is no abiding success without commitment.”

Therefore, whatever goal you intend to achieve in life, you have to make up your mind to pursue it relentlessly. There is a price to pay for a great marriage, career, academics, relationship, ministry, etc. Moreover, commitment always commands God’s commendation. When Abraham stayed with the decision to kill his only son, God said, “Now I know that you fear me…” (See Genesis 22:1-12).

When life meets a committed man, it submits to him. When hard times meet a committed man, they submit to him. Commitment will outlast every storm, it will challenge every excuse, it will go against the suggestions of the flesh, and it will make you stand far above others… Proverbs 22:29 says, “Do you see a man diligent in his work, He will STAND before kings not unknown men.”
