“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” ~ Genesis 1:1
REFERENCE: Genesis 1:1-10
The first name that introduces God in the Bible is Elohim. Upon this introduction, He proceeded into supernatural acts of creation; we could see a display of unmatched authority and supreme power. Elohim brought everything out of nothing and created order out of chaos. All these He did without recourse to a higher power or consultation with a superior. Hence, this name introduces God as the supreme authority to which every other power or authority submits.
Elohim is the most frequently used name for God in the Scriptures, as it reveals His power to cause things to be and His supremacy over all. He is the Mighty One – mighty to save, heal, deliver or defend. Elohim is plural in form (as though it speaks of more than one God), but it refers to the only true God. It emphasizes the majesty of our God – the God of gods and the Highest of all. An indication of the Trinity (three persons in the Godhead) is seen by some in this plural form. The singular name is Eloah; often shortened to El. We see this in other names of God, El-Shaddai, El-Gibbor, etc. We also see it in names like EL-ijah (the strong one is Yahweh), Dani-EL (the strong one is my judge), Samu-EL (the strong one heard me), or Ezeki-EL (the strong one is my strength). Elohim also is used for human magistrates, and in some cases, rulers (Psalm 82:6). The idea is that they act as delegates of God, the Judge of All, on earth, and they must submit to Him as those who must give account.
Elohim is the infinite, all-powerful God introduced in Genesis as Creator and Sustainer of all things. He has the power to create, repair, and restore. To know Him is knowing the God of all power and possibility. When you call on Elohim, you invoke God to show His supreme power and authority and to judge righteously. You are calling on El, the strong and Mighty One. I often pray this name over myself. Asking God to create the things lacking in my life, and sometimes, in my bodily (chemical or anatomical) composition – e.g., iron, vitamins, hormones, blood count, etc. Elohim is the Creator who can repair and restore diseased organs. Pray for regenerative and restorative miracles in your body.
When you call God Elohim, you are worshipping Him as the highest, the wisest, the greatest, and the holiest. Elohim is a name full of power and reverence. This power is displayed in all creation and that should provoke a worshipful response from you. Do you need a higher power in dealing with human authorities, rulers, or magistrates that have constituted a roadblock to your progress? Call to Elohim – He has all powers under Him. He will show Himself strong on your behalf, in Jesus’ name.
