“Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.” ~ Isaiah 53:4
REFERENCE:
Isaiah 53:1-5
If you are a human being, I am sure you feel the effect of man’s fall in the Garden of Eden daily. When Adam ate the forbidden fruit, the whole of God’s creation was thrown out of balance, and corruption came into the created order—pain, sorrow, sickness, afflictions, fears, etc., was introduced into the world because of sin. These became the totality of man’s grief.
Grief (Hebrew: Chǒlîy) is a pain like a hole drilled through the ear lobe. It is sickness, disease, trouble, anxiety, or calamity. Sorrow (Hebrew: Mak’ôbâh) is physical or mental pain.
From the home of the parents who just lost their three-year-old, to the man who lost his legs in a car accident, to the father who just lost his job, to the mother confined to a hospital bed, the young man who just got a negative medical diagnosis, or the teenager dealing with low self-esteem or failure in a final examination, life is full of painful experiences. Humanity needs help.
Isaiah spoke of a future when the Messiah would remedy all these maladies with His sacrifice on the cross. He spoke with certainty and as though already done, saying, “Surely, He has borne…” We live in that future today. Jesus died on the cross and has borne our griefs. He did not die for His own sake but for you and I. As He hung on the cross, God laid our griefs and sorrows on Him that He might expiate them once and for all. Afflictions have no legal right over us again.
When Jesus bore our griefs and sorrows, He carried them (away) so that we might no longer have them. Something taken away from you can no longer be in your possession. That sickness is not yours; neither is that mental oppression, poverty, fear, failure, or sadness; Jesus took them. Easter reminds you and me to stand our ground and refuse satan from smuggling anything that Jesus carried away on His cross into our lives. He whom the Son sets free is free indeed!
The promise continues: He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes, we are healed. Easter is a blessing to you, and I. Christ has given us victory over satan’s works; He has borne our griefs.
