MORNING DUTY: LOOK UP

“My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up.” ~ Psalm 5:3

We continue to learn from David’s morning duty today. He resolved that God would hear his voice every morning as a matter of duty and importance. He further said he would direct that voice to God and would look up. To what would David be referring? What does he mean?

From our text, it is plain that when David said God would hear his voice in the morning, he was referring to prayer. He implied that the most important duty in the morning is prayer. He then added that he would direct it to God. The imagery is that of an archer who loads his bow with an arrow and directs it at a target. David meant he would keep his mind from distractions but focus on God in prayer. He meant that he would pray specific and targeted prayers to God.

Another imagery David used is wood laid in order on the altar, or how priests in the tabernacle arranged the shewbread on the table. David was teaching that prayer should be properly laid out before God; it should follow a proper order: giving thanks, worshipping God, kingdom advancement, intercession, petitions and requests, warfare, and praise (thanks). David committed to praying intelligently, strategically, and according to divine protocol and order.

The last component of David’s morning duty in this text is his saying, “I will look up.” He meant that after praying, I will look to God for answers. He said in Psalm 145:15, “The eyes of all look expectantly to You, and You give them their food in due season.” The Hebrew phrase implies, “I will look out.” Hence, David meant, “I will look out for the answer; after I have prayed, I will expect the blessing to come. After spreading out my prayers to You, I will look out for answers.”

Can you see how this morning duty can give you all-day miracles? If you will lay out your prayer according to the protocol of the Spirit in the morning, expect God to respond with matching answers all day. We serve a prayer answering God. He said, “Call to Me and I will answer you.” Why pray if you will not look up for answers from God, and why look up, expecting God’s hand, when you have not prayed? Do not waste your mornings; direct your prayer to God and look up!
