“And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so, he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make.” – Jeremiah 18:4
REFERENCE:
Our world runs in cycles. The earth, sun, moon, and planets are spheres. The earth rotates around the sun in cycles, as the clock turns. They both account for the seasons that come in turns – night-day, summer-winter, rain-dry, or cold-heat.
There is a local parlance that says, “life is turn-by-turn”. It just means that it does not matter how good things seem to be happening for others around you right now, it will be your turn for a testimony soon. Potters work on turning wheels, molding clay lumps into any shape or vessel they desire with their hands. You may feel like that clay lump on the Potter’s wheel, wondering why your life has been turning around in meaningless cycles. Be assured that the Potter’s hands are on you, and He will guide you until these turns produce something meaningful out of your life.
Life may have been a series of repeated negative cycles of stagnation, near-success syndrome, failed relationships, dashed expectations, and always finding yourself in difficult situations. The clay in our text did not turn out well at first, yet, through the turning, things turned out well.
After an actor’s first audition, a casting director said, “Why don’t you stop wasting people’s time and go out and become a dishwasher or something?” That actor was Sydney Poitier, a black man from the Bahamas. He became the first black man to win an Academy Award in 1963 for Best Actor for the movie, ‘Lilies of the Field.’ President Obama gave him the highest civilian honor in 2009 – the Presidential Medal of Freedom. What would have become of Poitier if he had given up on his dreams following that negative turn of events? The director concluded he was a failure, but God had a different verdict – He turned everything around for his good.
The Potter in our text did not throw away the marred vessel; instead, he turned it into another vessel that was pleasing to him. God will not give up on you just because you are (have been) marred through the turning seasons of life. He will turn everything to your advantage and you will turn out well. You may feel dizzy or frustrated from the many repeated turns that have not yielded results, but know this, the Potter will not stop until the turning produces your best self.
