Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” – John 4:10
REFERENCE
John 4:6-15
Jesus here points to this woman that whatever benefits she gets from this well’s water will soon expire or evaporate and she will sooner or later return to fetch again. When we drink water to the full, we soon thirst again as though we never drank before. This means, whatever waters of comfort we drink of, we shall thirst again. Yesterday’s meat and drink will not do today’s work.
This Jacob’s well speaks of everything we go to for satisfaction, but which only gives a temporary ‘high;’ things we seek our essence and self-esteem from, things we tie our sense of significance to, hoping they will satisfy our inner thirst, but which never do. However, like a drug ‘junkie’, we keep returning to them for a fix; e.g., a relationship, money, fashion, friends, a job, high performance at work, earthly goods, clothes, etc. It will amaze you how many people find their definition in these things…who seek gratification from them.
However, the water Jesus gives is the Holy Spirit, He is not a well, which you go to with a bucket to fetch, but a spring which gushes up from within and never runs dry. Our heart then is not supposed to be a well that holds water poured into it from without, but a fountain that springs up and bubbles up the water of life or eternal/essential life from within. Hence, true satisfaction comes from the presence of the Holy Spirit within, not from the abundance of ‘things’ without.
If your sense of worth is not so derived, you will never be satisfied but will keep going with a bucket to those wells – and remember, you can never have more joy, self-esteem, satisfaction, etc., than your bucket can hold or than your well can give; and yes, wells are seasonal, for there are seasons you will go and you will find no water.
The woman then says, “Give me this water that I will thirst no more, nor have need to come to ‘this’ well again…” The desire in all of us should be same; we should say to Jesus, “Give me this water of Your Spirit’s presence and power, that I may not have to go to this hospital again, be hooked on drugs again, engage in illicit sex again, need man’s approval again, or ever need to prove a point again to feel complete or accepted.
May God satisfy every longing within you today with the presence of His Spirit, in Jesus name.
