SUCCEED AT WAITING

Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. – Romans 4:20 (NLT)

Waiting can be mentally torturing, it can be discouraging and overwhelming. It is a call to faith because you are not in control of the variables that determine the outcome of your expectation and the timing of its appearing. You have to depend and wait on God to act. Waiting on God to act was what Saul couldn’t do as we saw from previous episodes, and that cost him his kingdom. Abraham on the other hand is a sterling example of waiting on God. He waited for 25 years, holding on only to what God had said. All the facts were contrary to what God had said, yet he waited until he inherited the promise.

A close look at Abraham will teach us that to succeed at waiting on God, we have to:

1. Believe God – Abraham believed that what God had promised, He was able to do. In addition, He believed that God had the capacity to give life to the dead and to call the things that are not as though they exist. He could not imagine that Almighty God would say something He was incapable of doing. Ask yourself, ‘Can God do what I expect Him to do?’ Let that assure your heart.

2. Hold on to God’s Word –Abraham did not second-guess God. He did not think God’s word will fail. He must have remembered God’s faithfulness in the past for encouragement. Hold on to God’s word, confess it and declare it over yourself. It is recorded that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken. If you don’t quit, you will become what God has spoken over you – Hallelujah!

3. Learn to ignore contrary facts – Abraham did not consider (take into account to make an assessment) his own body, already dead (about 100 years old), and the ‘deadness’ of Sarah’s womb. He must have had suggestions from people (even though he fell for Sarah’s once), but he looked away from them. Look away from everything that speaks or looks contrary to what you are waiting for.

4. Continually give glory to God – Abraham praised God for who He is; for His power and faithfulness, etc. Stop complaining or comparing yourself to others. Don’t dwell on what you are waiting for but rather on what you should do in the wait – be full of thanksgiving and praise. It strengthens your faith and takes your focus off the wait.
