Every house is built by a man, no matter how tall, how deep, how wide, how beautiful, large, colorful, or expensive, it is first built in the man’s mind. Then, a man designs it through strategic planning and patience, he funds it, and often through much sacrifice, he builds it. Whatever a man desires or ‘sees’ in his mind’s eyes, he builds. The Bible puts forth a universal and undisputable truth here. Buildings just don’t appear out of thin air; they are the works or products of men’s hands. This truth, therefore reveals the power that God has given man to build whatever he desires or imagines; it shows the privileged man has been given to play ‘god’ through his ability to create and construct a desirable world or experience for himself.
Interestingly, the Greek word (oikos) used for house in our text, inasmuch as it speaks of a physical structure, also means, a family, home or household. What God is subtly saying here is that every family, home or marriage is built by a man. Good marriages are not made in heaven, and even if they are, they must be worked upon here on earth. God can give the dream and the idea but the responsibility to build, has been given to man.
Finding the will of God as to whom to marry, is not as important as doing the will of God when you marry. Even the bible says it is the doer of the word and not the hearer (finder) that is blessed. Every relationship requires building; it is largely about ‘continuous’ doing and it requires active involvement. Just as every physical building you see – tall, beautiful, decent, solid, enduring, and colorful; or weak, collapsing, dilapidating, ugly, and leaky – is the product of a man’s effort or lack of effort, so also is every relationship (or marriage) that you see – sweet, happy, enduring, progressive and godly; or ugly, quarrelsome, bitter, collapsed, deteriorating and weak – the product of a man’s effort/building or the lack of it.
Although all things have been built by God (authored, founded, and established in His eternal purpose), you must partner with Him and get to work in building your home, for without God, you are able to do nothing. You should see God as the Architect of your marriage and yourself as the builder. God has already given a blueprint/design, you just need to ensure you follow it while building. God is always at work in you to make you willing and able to obey his own purpose, so that when the storms come and the rains beat, your building will stand strong and unshakable.
God designed marriage to be honorable and beautiful. Man must take absolute care to build it in a way that aligns with God’s purpose and intent (not according to culture, tradition, beliefs or popular culture). He must dig deep into Christ and His word and lay the foundation for a happy home therein. Remember, you are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that you should walk in them. Therefore, arise and build!
