“Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, else they will not come near you.” Psalm 32:9
REFERENCE
Psalm 32:8-11
God is very much interested in leading His children and guiding them along paths of peace, prosperity and purpose. It will hurt Him if we, as His children, go astray, wander into dangerous places, and miss our purpose. His promise in our text today is that He would instruct and teach us in the way that we should go – His watchful eyes ever guiding us.
As willing as God is to lead us, we must be yielded and sensitive to the leading of His Holy Spirit. We must be willing to comply and make adjustments whenever the Spirit of God guides us. A disposition of the heart that says, “I am yielded,” pleases the Holy Spirit and encourages Him to speak to us. The problem usually is that, many times, we are stubborn, immovable, unyielding and insistent. It will often take something ‘extra’ to break and tame us.
Our text pictures horses and mules, which ordinarily, will not voluntarily yield obedience or compliance. A whistle, a beckon, or even a nudge will not make them do what is required. They must be harnessed and gagged with metal bits and bridles (in their mouths) before they yield obedience against their will. Until they are harnessed with bits in their mouths, they stubbornly resist (often vigorously kicking) any appeal by their owner.
God has promised that He would lead you in the way you should go and guide you, that you may not misstep. Why not just simply yield to Him and obey Him? Why won’t you readily trust His heart and trust Him with your life? Do not be like the horse of mule, needing a bridle (or an unfavorable event) before you respond to God. You don’t need to break a leg or lose an arm before you respond to God.
What has God been trying to get your attention (through His soft still voice) to do? What has He told you in His Word but you are still debating? What step(s) has He asked you to take, and it’s been months? What relationship has He asked you to cut off from, but you still hang on to? Don’t be a horse needing a bit and a bridle. Obey God. If you will ALLOW Him to instruct you, life will be more meaningful and joyful. Praise God!
