“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” – Psalm 23:1
REFERENCE:
Rohi (Hebrew for shepherd) is a word that is rich in meaning. It paints a picture of one who watches, feeds, and leads; David captured all these attributes in this Psalm by calling the Lord, Jehovah Rohi – The Lord, my shepherd. God wants His people to know Him as Rohi (Genesis 49:24) since it reveals Him as the caring Father and Overseer of His children, “…we are His people and the sheep of His pasture.” In Christ Jesus, God revealed Himself as the Good Shepherd who leads the sheep in and out to find pastures; He provides, protects, and ensures safety and rest for all His sheep. Jehovah Rohi is committed to your welfare and to all that makes life enjoyable; so, David said, “I shall not want.” He will satisfy your mouth with good things and daily load you with benefits.
As sheep, we tend to get lost; we must, therefore, stay near Jehovah Rohi (I Peter 2:25). He will guide you not to go through life as one groping in darkness. This Good Shepherd will lead you to green pastures of truth and rest in life, family, work, and ministry. Jehovah Rohi leads in pleasant and profound ways because He leads you away from evil and leads you into good. He leads with ‘Chesed’ (Hebrew: kindness, love, and mercy), putting Himself in your shoes. He knows you by name; He knows where you are, what you are going through, your frame, and how best to lead you. Jehovah Rohi binds up the broken – Psalms 147:3 says, “He heals the broken-hearted, and binds up their wounds.” He strengthens the weak and tends to the sick; He laid down His life for the sheep.
Who could be a better shepherd than One who has been a sheep? Many sheep will like to be shepherds, but not many shepherds want to be sheep. He didn’t just become a sheep; He became a Lamb (young sheep) by coming to earth. Imagine the joy in John the Baptist’s heart when he pointed and said, “Look! There is the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world.” John 1:29.
Tempted in every way you could face temptation, He suffered in every way you could experience suffering. Thus, He became the Good Shepherd who seeks and saves that which is lost (Luke 19:10); He feeds His sheep with lush, green pastures. He brings back those that have strayed and drifted away; HE draws them back into the fold. He is Jehovah Rohi!
