“This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shiloh.” – 1 Samuel 1:3a
REFERENCE:
1 SAMUEL 1:1-3
Jehovah Sabaoth means the Lord of Hosts, the God of the universe, and ruler of the armies of heaven. This name is here used in connection with Shiloh to express the infinite resources and power with which God acts for His people. The name is from the root word TSABA (a verb), meaning to wage war. As a noun, Tsaba means host; this host includes the heavens, the earth, the feathery hosts, animals, sun, moon, stars, and all of creation. Jehovah Sabaoth, therefore, reveals God as the Commander of all these hosts; the angelic army is at His disposal. He controls all the elements – sun, moon, stars, rain, wind, and planets. Jehovah Sabaoth is the Commander in Chief of commanders in chief.
Jehovah Sabaoth introduces us to the God who is over and above all. All creatures in heaven and earth are at His command, and He receives homage from them all. Graciously manifesting Himself to His people, He dwells between the Cherubim on the mercy seat (of the Ark of the covenant). This name reveals the military department of God. James 5:4 refers to Him as the Master Avenger for the cheated, denied, unjustly treated, and oppressed. Jehovah Sabaoth takes on any ‘enemy army’ that confronts you. “The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of thousands,” Psalms 68:17. He sends His angels to perform His bidding. For example, the angel of the Lord killed one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the military camp of the Assyrians. An angel also visited Egypt and slew the entire firstborn from North to South before morning. The Lord of Hosts sent an angel to release Peter from jail, and another to deliver Daniel from the lions’ den. A host of angels surrounded Elisha and his servant, to protect them from Syria’s army.
David invoked this name when he said to Goliath, “I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts.” You also can invoke the name of Jehovah Sabaoth when dealing with giant-sized problems and afflictions, and they will have no choice but to bow to the supremacy of the name. He also gives battle strategies; He revealed Himself to Joshua as the Commander of the army of the Lord and gave him a battle strategy. Jehovah Sabaoth will take over your battles and fight your war; all you need to do is stand still. With Jehovah Sabaoth, you do not have to take revenge against the person who offended or persecuted you; He knows what to do, because “Those who are with us, are more than those who are with them.”
