SHALL GOD NOT?

“And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?” ~ Luke 18:7

This woman had a peculiar experience with this judge. By his admission, he had no fear of God nor regard for any man. He was a mean judge who was an authority over himself. He was determined to deny this woman justice, but she wore him out (the Greek suggests that she gave him a black eye) by her continual coming and forced him to attend to her matter. Jesus said, if this wicked judge would answer the woman, shall God not answer His chosen ones?

I wonder why the judge would not answer this woman. Is it because he wanted a bribe? Was he a friend to the woman’s adversary? Was it because she was neither rich nor influential? Was he prejudiced against her faith, tribe, or race? For whatever reason, he refused her justice. If you are not careful, you may begin to see God as this judge, and it will reflect on your prayer life.

Do not mistake our prayer-answering God for the judge in this parable. He is a good God, better than any man, and loves you more than any man can. Jesus contrasts God’s character with that of the judge to encourage those who come to Him in prayers that He will answer them speedily:

1.     The judge is unjust, but God is just. He never does wrong; all His ways are perfect.

2.     The judge dealt with a petitioner (the widow) who was a stranger. God deals with us as His elect, His children, and as the same blood as His Son, Jesus Christ.

3.     The judge extended no invitation to the woman. She went to the judge by herself. However, God asks us to come boldly to the throne of grace, to ask, seek, and knock.

4.     The judge refused to hear the lady at first. God promises us: “Call to Me and I will answer.”

5.     This judge may be in league with the woman’s adversary. However, our God is against our adversary, satan. He would give us victory against him and gladly avenge His elect speedily.

Our relationship with God is incomparable to that of the woman with the judge. Therefore, we must not give up praying. If this widow would stay on a man from whom the chances of help were slim, how much more should we wait expectantly on God? Jesus said, “And shall God not avenge His elect who cry out day and night to Him, though he bears long with them.” God will answer you speedily. Go back and talk to God about that matter this week; shall God not answer you?
