“There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding…” ~ Isaiah 11:1-2
REFERENCE:
Prophet Isaiah earlier prophesied about a Son that would ‘be given,’ upon whose shoulders the government shall rest and whose name shall be Wonderful, Counselor… He was referring to the offspring of Jesse, Jesus Christ. This prophecy hinted at a dark period in Israel’s future when the tree of David’s royal line would be cut down. Jesus would come as a weak Rod from the stump of the chopped royal tree. However, the Spirit of God will be on this Rod to make a difference.
Jesus grew out of obscurity; He was born to a poor carpenter and an unknown young girl. Any royalty in his bloodline was eroded years ago due to neglect of the worship of God. Isaiah said, “He is as a root out of dry ground. He has no form of comeliness, and there was no desirable beauty in Him” (Is. 53:2-3). Hence, by His background, Jesus was not just a rod but a weak rod.
Despite such a background, Jesus did many noteworthy things. He rose from this setting to become a world wonder, a luminary to be spoken of by all people and worshipped all eternity. How could a weak Rod become a tree of life to many, bearing fruits of righteousness and life? Our text tells us: the Spirit of God came upon the Rod; yes, the Spirit of God anointed Jesus.
This tender rod needed to be watered with the dew of heaven to turn it into a strong scepter of rulership. Therefore, the Holy Spirit did not just come but rested on Him, depositing His gifts and graces on Him – the seven-fold manifestation of the Spirit – wisdom, knowledge, might, understanding, counsel, etc. Hence, the bible says He had the Spirit without measure.
You may feel like a dry rod from an unknown village or family or with deficient learning, yet, this same influence of the Spirit on a rod will take you from struggling to succeeding. You need the help of God’s Spirit to become or do anything of worth. Seek to have His presence with and on you at all times. You will access the divine treasury of wisdom, counsel, knowledge, might, and understanding. When the Spirit is on any rod, it can become a tree of life to many people.
