But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, ‘Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the LORD and remain there forever.’ ~ I Samuel 1:22
REFERENCE
I Samuel 1:21-24
The process of weaning is to cut a child off depending on the mother’s milk and to begin to introduce him to solid food. It metaphorically also refers to detaching someone from some comfort they are used to; depriving the flesh of certain affections and indulgence.
Spiritually, it speaks of maturity, growing in grace, obedience to the Word and the practicing of righteousness. It refers to dying to the lusts of the flesh and also of the ability to discern between right and wrong.
This is a call out to believers, especially leaders in the body of Christ, to be weaned off sensual appetites. To die to self, position, prominence and popularity. You should show that you are a skilled workman by rightly handling and dividing the Word of God, be willing to forsake the world and cleave to God, not turning back.
In all, tell yourself that you can do without certain ‘carnal pleasures’ as a good solider of God. This way, you will show the world that you are truly “the light of the world,” worthy to be emulated and fit for the Master’s use.
