“So Jesus answered and said to him, ‘What do you want Me to do for you?’ The blind man said to Him; ‘Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.'” Mark 10:51
REFERENCE:
Have you ever had a young fellow or sibling tell you that they need a job, and you ask them, “What kind of job?” and they respond, “Any kind.”? One of two things happens to you; you are either confused about how to help them or find a way to give them whatever is available, even if it is below their qualification. Also, when we pray, we should tell God what we want.
Being able to identify what you want when asking makes your faith targeted and laser-focused. Although Jesus knew Bartimaeus was blind, when He asked him, “What do you want Me to do for you?”, He wanted him to fix his faith on his utmost desire. As a beggar, his needs must have been endless: he wanted food, friends, clothing, a home, and anything good to make a man out of a pauper. However, more than all these, Bartimaeus asked for his sight.
Our prayers often do not focus on our greatest need; we allow our present state, fad, peer pressure, or immediate gratification to dictate prayer requests and miss out on what matters most. Bartimaeus knew that with his sight restored would take care of other needs – he could earn a living, meet and make friends, and cater to his finances and all other needs. He must have arrived at this conclusion by digging deep into his heart to make a proper inquiry.
If Bartimaeus had asked for food instead of sight, he would have gotten food, but he still would have been blind. What do you want from God that, if He answers, will make your other desires fall in place? Prioritize that need, focus your faith on it, get scriptural backing, and ask God for it. God wants you to be specific in asking, so you can be specific in thanking Him too.
Solomon, although given a blank cheque by God, asked for ‘one’ thing – wisdom. David said, “One thing I have desired of God…to dwell in His house.” Jesus commended Mary for choosing the ‘one’ needful thing – sitting to learn from Him. The ‘one’ thing each person chose gave them other things. God asks you, “Ene/Feyi/Ufuoma/Sam/Daniel…
