“Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law.” ~ Psalm 119:18
REFERENCE:
It is not every eye that looks that sees. Have you ever driven on a road you usually use only to notice a colorful five-floor building, and you wonder, “When did this building show up here?” It did not show up; it was built block-by-block. You drive on the road, but you rarely pay attention enough to see the changes on the road. To see ‘wondrous’ things, you need to pay attention.
Wondrous means wonderful, unique, extraordinary, or mind-blowing. God’s word contains wondrous things: miracles, wonders, inspiring stories, God’s plan for salvation, success tips for business, wisdom to navigate relationships, how to please God, etc. However, these can be seen only when God opens the eyes. Therefore, prayer is an integral part of Bible study.
Jesus said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.” Not everyone sees the wondrous things in scripture but those whom God shows; so, when you read the Bible and see truths that can change your life or give you the wisdom to handle a matter, thank God for it.
Wondrous things thrill us: unexpected, incredible, beautiful, great, unusual, or exceptional. God hides such things in the Bible to draw our interest so that we can lay claim to them when we discover them. If you are not a casual seeker or student of the Bible, the Holy Spirit will show you things that can revolutionize any area of your life. The word of God is a never-failing medicine and panacea for all of life’s challenges and concerns.
God gives others the privilege to see certain wondrous things in the Bible that you may not see. It is good to listen to sermons and share fellowship with other believers. The Ethiopian eunuch read Isaiah 53, but his eyes were shut to the chapter’s wonders until Philip opened the scripture to him. We must study the Bible carefully. “The Holy Spirit is given not to make our study unnecessary but to make it effective” ~ Boice.
