The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ,… – Romans 8:16-17
REFERENCE
Romans 8:14-17
An heir is a Legal inheritor who holds the right to receive property, position, or title of somebody else when that person dies. As believers, this passage reveals our status as joint or co-heirs with Christ Jesus; this connotes that we can partake freely of our Father’s goods.
The significance of this is that firstly, we have equal position with Christ: – The new birth puts us in the same rank with Jesus in the eyes of God, through His great sacrifice. He was made sin and we were made righteous through Him; therefore, we are as righteous as Jesus. We are not less important than Jesus before God; He loves us with the same love and accepts us in the beloved; moreover, we are seated with Him in the heavenly places, far removed from the reach of the ills of this world (Ephesians 2:5-6 & 13).
Secondly, we share equal power with Christ: – The new birth initiates us into the realm of power. If Christ dwells in us, then we have power over all the forces of darkness. I John 4:4 says, “…He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” Whatever Christ did we can also replicate because the Holy Spirit, who empowered Him to achieve great feats on earth, is the same Spirit presently resident in us; thus, we are equally anointed to demonstrate God’s power in our spheres of influence.
Lastly, we have equal possession with Christ: – An heir has access to the property and possessions of his father’s kingdom. The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof. Our adoption into the family of God has given us the privilege to become His heirs; in view of that, everything available to Christ is also available to us. Hebrews 1:2 reveals that Jesus Christ is appointed as the heir of the entire world; invariably, that makes us heirs of the entire world. God has put this world under us to nurture and administer (Psalm 24:1).
A man leaves for his heirs what he has; God gives His heirs what (or Who) He is. God Himself is our greatest possession. Hallelujah, we have a goodly inheritance!
