“Therefore, bear fruits worthy of repentance…” ~ Matthew 3:8
REFERENCE:
It is a season of transformation (moving from one form to another). A transformed person is a changed person, and true change begins from the mind; hence, repentance. The Greek word ‘metanoia’ means a change of mind or mode of thought. Biblical repentance is a genuine turning away from sin and a sincere desire to return to God. It is not just admitting you are wrong; it is a spiritual awakening that leads to restoration and a renewed relationship with God.
Let us consider the characteristics of transforming repentance. It consists of the following:
a. Recognizing the Need for Repentance: Acknowledge that you have strayed and need a change. Reflect on your thoughts, words, and actions, and ask God to reveal any areas of sin or rebellion. Paul said, “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith.” Open your heart to God’s conviction and allow Him to reveal areas requiring repentance.
b. Turning Away from Sin: It is foolishness to keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. Repentance involves deliberately turning away from sin and deciding to live right. When John was baptizing in Jordan, he called his candidates to live differently than they had before. If your thoughts continually lead you away from God, submit them to Him and ask Him to give you strength to overcome in your mind and to live a life pleasing to Him.
c. Receiving God’s Forgiveness: David said, “A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise” (Psalm 51:17). Heartfelt Repentance provokes forgiveness and transformation. No matter how bad things were, you can expect God’s renewal and the burden of guilt and shame to be removed. True repentance opens up restoration and reconciliation with God.
d. Bearing Fruit Worthy of Repentance: True Repentance goes beyond words, transforming your actions and attitudes. If you have said ‘no’ to something, you should say ‘yes’ to another thing. The evidence of repentance is a transformed life. Live in obedience to God, showcasing the fruits of repentance and drawing others closer to Him.
In Luke’s account, all who attended John’s baptism of repentance witnessed a transformation. One-time stingy people became generous; crooked tax collectors became straight, and soldiers ceased to oppress the people and collect bribes. There was a significant transformation in Israel. Never think that you are all you should be; there is a better version to emerge; the way to bring it out is by continuous repentance, renewing your mind for true transformation.
