How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? – Proverbs 6:9
James 2:14 says, “Faith without works is dead.” Vision and Planning, two secrets to living successfully like the ants, cannot happen without hard work. A vision without work is just a daydream; likewise, planning without work is just theory. Thomas Jefferson said, “I’m a great believer in luck, but I find that the harder I work, the more I have of it.”
For the ants, hard work is evident in their daily lives. They are laborious, persistent, resilient and always on the move. They work till work is done; which means they work day and night. They build their own system of homes and underground tunnels, and peradventure it gets ruined, they waste no time rebuilding it. Though they are small, weak and fragile, yet, they are very industrious.
Think for a moment, have you ever seen an ant idling away anywhere in your house? They are so committed to work that within the colony, there is a group of ants known as “Workers.” They are always on the move, and therefore, always end up with sweet things (food). Indeed, nature has a way of rewarding labor!
Therefore, the next secret to having a successful life is ‘hard work!’ For your dreams to become reality, or for what God has shown, or placed inside you to emerge, you must work, and work, and work hard. You must be willing to make trade-offs (computer games, TV programs, sleep, idle talk, hang outs, perambulating, etc.). You must be ready to treat laziness as an enemy – It is a spirit of poverty in disguise. Nobody ever made progress lying down in bed.
Long before ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ star, Susan Boyle, came to limelight, she invested hard work through years of singing in her local Catholic church, in local choirs, in karaoke performances at pubs in and around her village; and also participated in her parish church’s singing tours to different counties and cities. She had talent but talent alone is not enough; the talented but lazy man will be a servant to the untalented hardworking man.
No matter what today’s society says, hard work still guarantees success and laziness will clothe a man with rags. So, pray hard as if your success depends on it and equally work hard as if your success depends on it.
Pray for the grace to overcome slothfulness of any kind as it relates to work; and for strength to be a diligent worker wherever you are presently stationed in life.
