BE SINGLE-EYED

“The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” – Matthew 6:22 (KJV)

If you are like me, several things appeal to you, business, singing, speaking, art, sports, skills, trade, learning new things, etc. The gifts within you are calling for expression. If you are not careful, you will become a ‘Jack of all trades and master of none.’ You will try many things but make no success of any and find yourself constantly starting and stopping projects.

Jesus here used the single eye to describe a life solely devoted to pleasing God and the evil eye as being distracted from following God. This principle holds true in every area of life; what you give your attention or focus to tends to develop and prosper. A single eye is laser-focused on a specific interest, career, trade, line of business, etc., without distraction until results show. A single-eyed man is skillful in identifying what areas his strength lies in and invests his effort and time in developing them. He does not jump from one idea or business to the other; he does not second-guess what he believes his life should be about. He envies no one, wishing he has what they have; he has found his lane, has started his race and knows he will finish well.

“If your eye is single, your whole body will be full of light.” When you are focused on what is most important to you (your identified calling, business, career, profession, etc.), you will find out that you begin to see what others don’t see in that line of endeavor. Light speaks of ‘vision;’ it helps you see ahead, travel confidently while others are unsure and stumbling in the dark, and gives you speed. Hence, you move faster than others who are trying this and that. Because light helps you see ahead, you are not bothered by transient unfriendly circumstances.

Jesus visited the house of two women; one had a single (focused) eye, and the other had an ‘evil’ (distracted) eye. Martha went about cooking, setting the table, dusting the chairs, etc., while Mary chose to sit with Jesus and listen to His wisdom. Jesus rebuked Martha for her going to and fro, but commended Mary, saying, “Just ONE THING is needed, and Mary has chosen it.”

Be single-eyed; find that one needful thing (like Mary) and stay with it; eventually, men will recognize and celebrate you. Light will break forth for you in your business and career; you will no longer be confused or depressed, wondering if your life is pleasing God or makes any sense. When your eye becomes single, you will inevitably get direction for your life, and living becomes a delight. We will look at practical ways to make your eye single tomorrow.

+ Lord, help my eye to be single. Teach me focus, commitment, and devotion to a cause.
