EL-ELYON: THE MOST-HIGH GOD

“And he blessed him and said: Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth.” – Genesis 14:19

Those who know their God shall be strong and do great exploits. God desires that as His children, we know Him intimately; He has therefore revealed Himself through different names in the scripture. We will look at these names of God to enrich our worship of Him.

The name, El-Elyon, emphasizes the divine supremacy of God. It is the most majestic name of God in the scriptures. It reveals God as the Highest Authority of all; He is higher than any name in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. Elyon is from the root word ALAH (not Allah), which means ascend, climb, dominion, uppermost, supreme, elevated, and high in rank. All power belongs to El-Elyon; He has the power to do all things – to promote and demote, to take life and give life. 

Abram referred to Him as the possessor of heaven and the earth; He delivers from enemies, and He is worthy to receive the tenth (tithe) of all our blessings. El-Elyon tolerates no rivals and shares His glory with no one. Satan coveted this name, but he was humiliated and brought low. He gives victory in any battle He is invited. He is so great, yet He regards the humble; He resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. El-Elyon is the One before whom every knee shall bow and all tongues confess. He is greater than every mountain of opposition. The name bears the anointing for promotion, for He is the God from whom exaltation comes. When there is a casting down around you, El-Elyon causes a lifting up (Job 22:29).

Psalms 82:6 declares, “You are gods, sons of the Most-High” (El-Elyon). You are like your Father; you have an anointing to rise above situations; you cannot be kept ‘under circumstances’ because you are destined for the top. When you know El-Elyon, you rise above financial depression, need, failure, frustration, pain, etc. You are seated with Him in the heavenly places, far above principalities and powers, and, as He is, so are you in this world.
