“For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you. Isaiah 54:10 (ESV)
REFERENCE
Isaiah 54:4-10 (ESV)
This profound statement was made by God Himself. It is an assurance of His steadfast and undying love for His children, as well as an establishment of His covenant of peace with us. In trying to understand the import of this statement, think of how unshakeable and unmovable physical mountains and hills can be. Howbeit, God is saying even if it were somehow possible for mountains and hills to be removed, yet His steadfast love for us cannot be shaken.
How deep is God’s love for us then? We cannot fully answer this question because God’s love is beyond our intellectual capacity; it is not something we can easily grasp and it is incomparable to any earthly description or feeling of love we have ever known or will ever know. The only way we can attempt to explain God’s love is to describe what it means for us – the recipients.
God’s steadfast love for us means that He is eternally committed to us. He is not like fair-weather friends who leave us at the slightest sign of trouble or uncertainty. Also, His promises are not just words of encouragement; they are covenants that He is bound to perform. More so, His love for us is unconditional; He expresses His love towards us even when we not deserving of it.
Lamentations 3:22-23 in the English Standard Version describes God’s steadfast love this way: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Likewise, Romans 8:39 affirms that nothing is capable of separating us from the love of God. Thus, there is no end to this love; it is renewed for us each day we wake up; and it is therefore a misrepresentation to ever think that God has forsaken you or loves you less because of the uncertainties of life.
Rest in God’s steadfast love for you and cease from life’s anxieties. God is for you; nothing can successfully be against you.
