Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people Israel.'”

The seemingly small and insignificant things God allows you to go through in life are what He mostly uses to train you for the bigger tasks ahead. For this reason, you should be faithful and diligent wherever you are right now because it is just a preparatory school. Look at where you are and what you do right now as a seed; and as that seed is watered through faithfulness, it will continue to grow until it bears fruits of greatness.
David started out as a shepherd boy who tended sheep but God lifted him to be king (shepherd) over His people. His years of tending sheep, added with the bravery he displayed in fighting off the lions and bears that came after the sheep, were his years in preparatory school. God saw in David a servant leader; and at the right time, He elevated him to lead His people. Peter was a fisherman when Jesus called him to follow Him. His years of experience as a fisherman prepared him to be a fisher of men; he ended up as the foremost apostle of Christ. Daniel, though a captive in Babylon, got trained and served in the king’s palace for years. His sharp mind of wisdom was noticed; and that earned him a position as Special Adviser to four consecutive governments. (See, I Samuel17:34-35, Matthew 4:18-20, Daniel 1:1-21, & 2:48-49).
Zechariah 4:10a in the New Living Translation says, “Do not despise these small beginnings.” Starting small does not mean staying small or ending small. In due season, as you remain faithful, God will take all the skills, knowledge, exposure and experience you have acquired in the smaller tasks and use them for a bigger assignment that will bless humanity and bring glory to His name. So, wherever you are now or find yourself later is never small; it is in fact a door through which God will cause you to access bigger opportunities of service to God and humanity.
