“Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; and Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order…” ~ Psalm 40:5
REFERENCE:
The year is coming to a close, and it is the season of thanksgiving. If you are not deliberate in counting what God has done, you may drown in the feeling that much hasn’t happened for you in the year. However, David felt differently; he said, “Many are Your wonderful works.”
It takes reflection to conclude that God’s works in your life are many. David was persecuted by his boss, a victim of a coup plot by his son, exiled from his throne and city, and lost a newborn baby and his friend Jonathan e.tc. Yet, he said, ‘many’ are Your wonderful works, O Lord. David interpreted his experiences positively and considered that he survived them by God’s grace. He must have counted the victories, escapes, wealth, favor, honor, etc., that God blessed him with and concluded that they were innumerable – great in quality and quantity.
If you are reading this, your life is a summation of the many things God has done in your life: provision, health, sweet sleep, growth, friendship, favors, escapes, near misses, joy, protection, and answers to prayers. If God had looked away sometime in your life, you would have been exposed to the unrestrained wrath of satan; but for Him you are not consumed. Hence, thanksgiving is more than a polite “Thank you” you say when someone does something good for you, it must be your heartfelt response to the goodness of God in your life.
Think of the many benefits of God in your life and thank Him for them. You cannot say you have nothing to be thankful for. That will be untrue and an indictment against God. Our text says, “Many are Your wonderful works.” There are many things to thank God for, and He expects praise from you. There is no room for depression or moodiness this season…only thanks.
You may not think much has happened for you this year, but thanking God when your desires are delayed is a way of crediting God with trust and ability, even before you see your answers. So, in anticipation of the fulfillment of your desires, thank God with a grateful heart. It says to God that you have hope, you trust His character, are assured that He has your good at heart, and He is working all things in your favor. Thank Him because He will give you victory at last. How would you thank God when your desires are finally met? Thank God like that now.
