PARTNERS IN PURPOSE: LOYAL AND STRATEGIC

“Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the captains, and he said: “We are yours, O David; we are on your side, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers!” – I Chronicles 12:18

For someone to be a true partner in purpose, their loyalty must not be in question. It is good to know that you have people you can depend on, who are truly on your side and would not stab you while your back is turned to them. David had to ask the people that came to him if they were loyal to him; two cannot walk together unless they agree. If loyalty is absent, partnership is impossible and help cannot be rendered or received. The sons of Benjamin and Judah pledged to David, “We are yours. We are on your side. Peace to you and to all your helpers.” That’s it! They sealed their loyalty with those words, but there was another quality in David’s partners in purpose.

Strategy! The men who came to David were military strategists and good team builders and team players. They could set up winning battle formations (verse 35) and knew how to position each battalion according to their skills. They were outstanding team players and were exceptionally gifted with the capacity for leadership (verse 4). They were referred to as captains, leading teams of up to 100 and 1000 men. People like this on your team are the administrators and managers. They can help you analyze your strengths and weaknesses, your opportunities and threats. They know how you can position yourself to face the challenges that threaten your vision. They can help coordinate and organize your team members and assign relevant tasks to them. They have an eye for details and have the capacity to empathize and connect with people.

True partners in purpose are committed to your peace and to that of your institution. They don’t come on your team and become a source of stress, instead, they are stress relievers. They will stay with you through it all – sink or swim, until your head is permanently above the waters; verse 22 reveals that they came daily to build with David until his army was great. The bible calls them men of valor because of their integrity and trustworthiness. You can make some of them serve on the Board of your organization or institution for oversight functions too. It is often not in the number of people on your team, it is in the quality of people on your team. I pray that God will instruct and send to you, loyal and strategic thinking ‘Partners in Purpose.’

+ Do an audit of the people on your team or in your circle of helpers. Can you identify the strategists? Are they in positions where they can strategize?

+ Are the people on your team loyal to you and to the vision? Do you think they are in it for what they can get or for what they can give?
