“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!” – Luke 15:17
REFERENCE:
It bears repeating that the quality of your thoughts determines the height of your success. In sports, no matter how gifted an athlete is physically, if he does not have what it takes mentally (being able to think positively when facing difficult opponents or challenges), he will not succeed. Right actions lead to success, but these actions must be born out of quality thoughts. Successful people succeed by their thinking; their hands are only helpers to their brains.
The prodigal son found himself at the bottom of a pit of lack, discouragement, regret, failure, hunger, etc. He had wasted his opportunities and goodwill and was now feeding pigs. Our text says, “When he came to himself, he said…” That is, he came to a point where he engaged his brain and began to think of his life before that point, how he got there, and how he would move forward. He changed his thinking to change his life; I believe that the kind of thinking that got him out of his father’s house was not the same as that which sent him back.
If you focus your mind continually on one thing, it will become a reality. You become what you focus on. Proverbs 17:22 says, “A joyful, cheerful heart brings healing to both body and soul…” Hence, even in sickness, if you focus your mind on joy and health, you get healed. Good thoughts don’t produce bad results, and neither do bad thoughts produce good results. A reason people do not achieve their dreams is desiring to change their results without changing their thinking. It won’t work. You cannot reap corn where you planted beans.
Muse was an ancient Greek goddess who spent much time in privacy and thinking. Muse means to ponder, think and reflect. The prefix “a” often renders any word negative (e.g., theist/atheist or moral/amoral). So, ‘a-muse’ means no thinking. The root of the word ‘amuse’ is to distract or divert; that is, to ‘lead the mind astray.’ Today, it connotes entertainment. Our society thrives on amusement which keeps us from thinking. We will rather be amused than muse. Imagine if while the prodigal son was in that state, all he did was amuse himself with TikTok videos.
Move away from everything (or people) that make thinking difficult for you. You are what you think! Think creatively, think big-picture, focus on a thought, ask questions, and change the status quo. Think possibility, and think realistically. Reposition yourself and think for change.
