“…Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” – John 1:29b
REFERENCE:
The Baptist’s statement, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world!” calls us to take a close look at Jesus and discover Him in His fulness as God’s answer to everything that plagues man and the hope he desires. John saw Him as a sacrificial lamb because of His mission to be our substitute at the executioner’s post, dying for our sins. Several prophets and saints beheld Him and spoke glowingly about Him. Today, behold the Lamb; what do you see?
He is our sin-bearer who took away the world’s iniquities because He is innocent and free from sin. His precious blood redeemed us, not corruptible things like silver or gold. As we behold the Lamb, we see the love of God personified, love that revealed itself through sacrifice. In the Lamb of God, we see God’s unconditional, unwavering love.
He is our Mediator in heaven’s court, our great Advocate and Lawyer – “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus” (I Timothy 2:5). He brokered a new and better deal for us by dying. Unlike the Old Covenant, he gave us access to God through grace, not works. By this, His saints may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. He is our High Priest who offered the sacrifice, yet He was the sacrifice that was offered.
This Lamb can set satan’s prisoners free, having disarmed him through His cross. He is the First and Last, the Living One who died, who is now alive forever, and has the keys of hell and death. He is our High Priest who ministers at the altar in heaven on our behalf, continually making intercessions for us, ceaselessly invoking God’s mercy upon us.
He is a Lamb, but He is also a Lion; He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah and the Root of David. He is the Sun of Righteousness and the Light of the world. He has borne our grief and carried our sorrows; He was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, the punishment for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes, we were healed. When you behold the Lamb of God, what do you see? You can never receive from Him more than you see Him. So, look closer.
