MORNING DUTY: MY VOICE

“My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up.” ~ Psalm 5:3

Every new day is ushered in by the morning. The morning is the foundation of every day. If the foundation is well laid, there will be stability throughout the day. It is the gate to each new day; it can either open to goodness or keep it away, depending on what men do with the morning.

Each morning promises another chance at having a better life. It is an opportunity to correct the errors of the previous day, a reason to thank God for surviving yesterday, and the gift of the opportunity to invest in tomorrow. The Psalmist said, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” The morning is so important that if wasted, it affects the day. Richard Whatley said, “Lose an hour in the morning and you will spend all day looking for it.”

In our text, David chose a good start for his mornings. He said, “My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord.” It was not a prayer but a resolution made. He decided to let no morning pass without God hearing his voice in praise, worship, prayer, and communion. The sense of the text suggests David would make this his first assignment daily. Before he greeted his wife, children, or staff, before any administrative duty, God would hear his voice.

It is an attitude worth emulating. God did not make us His children dumb. We cannot afford to be silent in the mornings or withhold our speech from Him. His love and Spirit within us should move us to engage in this holy morning duty. It should be more important than a cup of coffee, reading the news, or checking messages on your mobile device. Prayer should knock on the door of every new day so that we can walk into open doors and under open heavens all day.

The morning is the fittest time for interaction with God. This Jesus did, as seen in Mark 1:35. Charles Spurgeon said, “An hour in the morning is worth two in the evening.” Let us give God the mornings of our days and lives, and we can be sure that both the evenings of our days and our lives will be blessed and secured by God. The least you can do is begin each day with, “Good morning, Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit.” Birds rise early to sing to their Creator. That should be your morning duty; let the Creator hear your voice in the morning.
